Autumnal Stroll: Zentralfriedhof- Central Cemetery Vienna.

'Opened in 1874, then still lying outside of Vienna's city borders, the cemetery spans 2.4 square kilometres with 3.3 million interred here. It is also second largest cemetery, after Hamburg's Ohlsdorf Cemetery (more than 4 km²), by area and largest by number of interred in Europe.'

I enjoy such walks especially in this season when there is some fog or light drizzle, when I'm clothed in warm, natural fabrics and when there are not too many people about so that I can let my thoughts roam freely and undisturbedly.

(Lisa) I wanted to add the other day: Going there during the week you’ll nearly be the only living soul present. There are graves in various states of neglect; from some the heavy stone-lids have been lifted off by the shifting soil, some are almost completely covered in ivy, convolvulus and vine, grown over by tall grass or cracked by small tress or bullets from the war, some are like small temples, others merely cast-iron crosses. It’s certainly worth a visit. After a walk through that plant-covered necropolis I always feel invigorated.

Makavetis: I’ll look into it.
